Celebrity Weight Loss - Why Are We So Triggered By It?
Why are we so triggered when we see celebs lose weight at warp speed? Is it because it makes us feel more pressure and dissatisfaction with our own bodies?
It seems like there’s a recent surge of extreme celebrity weight loss from Lindsay Hubbard, the star of Summer House, to Kyle Richards and Erika Girardi of RHOB. And even more extreme is the chatter and comments on social media - the most common accusation being hurled is that all of these stars are abusing Ozempic or similar weight loss injections (although none of this has been substantiated or confirmed.) The reality is that drastic and ostensibly rapid weight loss has been around forever - well before Ozempic came to the market.
So how should we feel less activated by reality stars new withering waistlines? And what about in general when we notice anyone around us shrinking down?
First, recognize that rapid weight loss is rarely intentional or healthy weight loss. If it’s happening, there is likely something deeper going on such as extreme emotional distress, medical condition or medication side effects, or just something that’s personal and private.
Second, labeling someone as too small or skinny is just as harmful and damaging as calling someone too fat or large.
Third, remember that no matter how someone’s looks have changed, they’re still the same person, albeit possibly in a more vulnerable and fragile state than before.
Be supportive, not critical.
Working on how we treat and view others can also improve the way we feel about ourselves and our own body image.
